The catacombs of Rome are ancient underground cemetery areas built by both the Jewish and Christian communities in the second century. They are composed of a network of tunnels dug into the rock in some cases even on several levels. 

In the subsoil of Rome there are more than 50 catacombs in which there are about 150 km of galleries , many of these can be visited today, with us you can choose which one to discover:  San Callisto, San Sebastiano, Priscilla, Domitilla, SS Marcellino and Pietro or San Agnese 

Catacomb of St. Callixtus:

  • The oldest official cemetery of the Christian community in Rome.
  • Crypt of the Popes, which houses the tombs of the popes who reigned between 230 and 283.

Catacomb of St. Sebastian:

  • An area used as a pozzolan quarry in the first century.
  • Underground galleries reused for burial niches.
  • Construction of mausoleums and a "circiform" Basilica by Emperor Constantine.
  • Tombs of the martyrs Sebastian and Eutychius.

Catacomb of Priscilla:

  • Located on Via Salaria, with galleries on two floors.
  • Belonging to the senatorial family of the Acili.
  • Cryptoporticus with the Greek Chapel.
  • Burials of numerous popes, including Sylvester and Celestine.

Catacomb of Domitilla:

  • One of the largest catacombs in Rome.
  • They originally belonged to Flavia Domitilla, granddaughter of Flavius Clement and a Christian.
  • Hypogeum of the Flavians and crypt transformed into a basilica by Pope Damasus.
  • The bodies of the martyrs Nereus and Achilleus were deposited.

Catacomb of St. Agnes:

  • Venerated and famous Roman martyr.
  • Possible martyrdom in the time of Decius or Valerian.
  • He died when he was only 12 years old.
  • His body was placed in a hypogeum owned by his family on the Via Nomentana.
